The Intermediary Technology Institute (ITI) Techmedia’s sixth research and development program tackled the science and engineering of condition based monitoring – addressing the maintenance of valuable assets which may be remotely based or sufficiently large in number to pose challenges in their management and care. Condition based monitoring is the core technology for smart grids, smart homes, etc. ITI Techmedia invested more than £4.75 million into this effort over three years, partnering with the University of Strathclyde (Glasgow) and a number of other institutions covering animal health and husbandry.
In 2009, Embedded Technology Solutions (ETS) Ltd. was formed as a new start-up company and spun out of the University of Strathclyde. ETS licensed the condition based monitoring platform, named Silent Herdsman™, from Scottish Enterprise, the economic development arm of the Scottish government who funded the establishment of ITI Techmedia and commercialized the technology.
ETS’s strategic UK partner, National Milk Records plc (NMR), sells the Silent Herdsman platform to dairy farms throughout the UK and Ireland.
